I'm always been a fan of cartoons and since its summer and nothing else to do we can just sit in our favorite couch open a cold drink and have a DVD marathon. And here are the list of some of the best animated films I've watched since I can remember. Hope you guys like it (arranged chronologically).
Pinocchio (1940) - This is one of the greatest and one of my favorite Disney films ever made. Pinocchio is a magical and sometimes emotional story about the wooden puppet brought to life by the fairy as well as a truly scary sequence involving donkeys.
Dumbo (1941) - A scary and heartwarming film. It's strange to have a film where the main character, title character even, doesn't actually talk, but I suppose there's nothing for him to say, his actions and expressions say it all.
Last unicorn (1982) - It's kind of sad how hardly anyone knows of this movie. The story is destined to leave you touched and keep your mind thinking. I might even call this movie a bit inappropriate for kids, but you can't let one or two words get in the way of exposing your children to a truly theatrical, deep movie like this.
Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind (1984) - Although the incredible "Princess Mononoke" later upstaged this early work in terms of art and detail, in many ways I still prefer "Nausicaa". Its imaginative and well-conceived world puts me in mind of Dune with its feuding factions, its giant creatures, and its strong ecological message.
Laputa:"Castle in the Sky" (1986) - I have seen just about all of Miyazaki's films, and they are all beautiful and captivating. But this one rises above the rest. This movie totally impressed me! Everything from the plot, to the setting and through to the characters is wonderfully rendered on film, and evokes the kind of magical feeling of excitement and adventure I haven't felt since I was knee high to a grasshopper.
American Tail (1986) - The reason that this movie is worth watching is the Award-winning song, "Somewhere Out There," which is one of the best songs that are in a movie. I haven't seen this movie in a VERY LONG time! But one thing sticks out why I like it-- Somewhere Out There sung by Feival and Tanya-- in my opinion I think it sounds better than the same song sung by James Ingram and Linda Ronsdant-- it seems more sentimental.
The Land Before Time (1988) - The kiddie dinosaurs themselves, Littlefoot the main protagonist (who also loses his mother) Cera, Petrie, Ducky and Spike, each have their own personalities ranging from heroic to goofy to scared and even stuck-up. This gives something that kids can hang on to, very simple characterizations that change only through the often used but not too tiresome ideal of friendship and group-work, etc etc.
Who Framed Roger Rabbit (1988) - It manages to successfully blend the two worlds of live-action and animated film. Perhaps the most intriguing thing about Roger Rabbit is that the film is surprisingly dark for a children's film, and it has loads of humor and the plot is magnificent.
My Neighbor Totoro (1988) - This film just captures you so naturally, without trying and without even having much of anything to show you but a couple of excited young sisters exploring their new house, the forest that surrounds and it and the cuddly spirit that inhabits it. I believe kids will love Totoro, me too. But as a grown-up what I love most is the serenity, the innocence, and the purest happiness described in it.
Grave of the fireflies (1988) - is a bold statement on the condition of the human soul during conflict. A magnificent piece of work and one of the most heartbreaking tales ever told. The fact that it's so plain and blatant, with no attempt to console the audience takes the tragedy to a whole new level and I don't doubt that many audience members will be holding back tears upon the film's conclusion.
Beauty and the Beast (1991) - The story is heartwarming, and beautiful. Kids will like it for it's comedy and memorable characters. Adults will like it for it's message that beauty is only skin deep, and love can do miracles. Plus Beast library's is to die for, I love it... I love it... I love it!!!!
The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993) - Tim Burton rang in my ears as one of Hollywood's most eccentric directors. Whenever I hear that a Tim Burton film is coming out I think of The Nightmare Before Christmas and how wonderful it is. The story is very original, the scenery is wonderfully Gothic and the characters and animation is to scream for.
Lion King (1994) - This film had it all, it was funny, emotional, had family drama, and above all, great animation and songs! My personal favorite character is Rafiki, the Baboon! I still cant forget the line he says to Simba "Past can hurt, but as I see it, you can either run from it, or learn from it!" it is so true! And who can forget Pumba and Timon singing Hakuna Matata, makes me want to dance around with them.
The Iron Giant (1999) - Friendship. Love. Respect. Growing up. and who knew that Vin Diesel could sound like a robot? I love the political allegory inside this seemingly simplistic tale. And the details of the plot are magnificent, as is the visualization. A true masterpiece all-round.
Toy Story 2 (1999) - Toy Story 2 exceeded my expectations; it's better than the original Toy Story. Who can forget Jessie's heartbreaking tale of abandonment is made clear in the song "When She Loved Me", beautifully sung by Sarah McLachlan. Although, the movie ends with the typical Disney happy ending, there is a twinge of sadness, as the toys must face the fact that their days with Andy are numbered. Woody puts it best when he says that "it will be fun while it lasts." The ultimate message of this movie is that life is short, and we must never lose the spark, that sense of awe and wonder that we had as children.
Titan A.E.(2000) - Titan A.E is a story set in a post-earth era (hence the A.E: after earth, which i thought was a nice touch). The movie plot my not be great but the animation was so brilliantly colorful and imaginative.
Spirited away (2001) - This is a wonderfully the best imaginative and fantastical children's fantasy. This film works well with children
but works wonders with adults. You need to watch this to know how good this film is...
Monsters, Inc.(2001) - My personal favorite Pixar movie. I even have a poster of this movie hanging on top of my bed with their famous quote "We scare because we care". This movie makes any scary monster lovable.
Finding Nemo (2003) - I thought Finding Nemo was one of the best films I have ever seen. Not only did it have excellent animation but it also had a heartwarming story as well. The values of trust, letting go, and facing your fears in the setting of the fascinating ocean environment, along with the comic relief of Dory, proved an ingenious way of making an excellent film.
Shrek 2 (2004) - If you liked Shrek you will go ga-ga over the second. Based in the ordinary fairy tales, the main thing here is to break the rules and the enchantment of those stories and show it all in a different way; Why the prince needs to be so perfect? Why the princess needs to be so beautiful? Why they need to live in a perfect castle? Why can't the royals be problematic? All of these answers are more than answered in Shrek. By the way, this is a movie with lots of humor. So, be prepare to laugh. (Donkey is annoying, but the biggest part of the fun comes from him!)
The Incredibles (2004) - "The Incredibles" along with the story about reclaiming greatness, is that it is about family. In a very touching scene when Mr. Incredible is about to do battle with the seemingly invincible Omnidroid, he admits to Helen "...I'm not strong enough..." Having super powers is great. Having the love of family is truly powerful.
Meet the Robinsons (2007) - Love the music. Gorgeous "Little Wonders" by the fantastic Rob Thomas played at the end coordinated with the story ending - beautifully done. And I specifically love the quote by Walt Disney shown at the end of the film. Around here, however, we dont look backwards for very long. We keep moving forward, opening up new doors and doing new things
and curiosity keeps leading us down new paths.
Persepolis (2007) - One of the things that makes this movie unique is that a lot of it is told from the point of view of a child that does not really understand the politics of what is going on in contemporary Iran, a topic that is more relevant today than it's ever been before.
